Renaissance period (1450-1600)

Renaissance period (1450-1600)Renaissance means 're-birth' and it stands for a complete change in material and spiritual culture. It has its significance in textiles. People wore gold and silver brocades, velvet and silk, embroidered fabrics and fur.

The colour restrictions of the middle ages were almost completely lifted during renaissance. Personal preference ruled over and gained supremity over conformity. However, all this was held in practise for the upper class. Italy at that time had a monopoly in fabric as a result of its trade connections with the orient, access to silk and other fabrics of fineness as unknown.
