November 18, 2008
A grant of USD 1.25 million has been awarded to Philadelphia University for establishing the Pennsylvania Advanced Textile Research and Innovation Center (PATRIC). The grant is given by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development through the Ben Franklin Technology Development Authority. The Center's aim will be the development of technologies and commercialization through applied research motivated by the needs of an initial batch of eight industry partners within the Commonwealth. Other partnerships will be formed with companies throughout the northeast US. The primary focus of PATRIC will be on three areas of advanced textile research and technology development- nanofiber technology for biomedical devices; human comfort interactions with protective textile systems; and the identification of toxic agents in consumer textiles and apparel. A Biomedical Textiles Structures Laboratory will also be established that will focus on development, testing and support of basic research in biomedical textile devices through various nanofiber platforms and applications.
